While in classic wet sump lubrication, or pressure lubrication circulation, the oil is pumped from an oil container into the cylinder crankcase, dry sump lubrication follows a different concept. In this case, the oil will be transported to the needed areas with at least two pumps and a separate container (dry sump tank). In particular, due to very high centrifugal forces, oil can be used more efficiently for engine cooling and lubrication. In the past this system was used primarily for motorcycles or sports cars. Today, it is emerging more and more in all-wheel-drive vehicles and luxury cars.
